Understandably if you are thinking about installing them in your own home, you will want to know if you will be able to undertake the job yourself. Rest assured that by following the instructions below you will be able to fit them easily with a few basic tools you most likely already have.

What tools you will need:

A drill as well as a drill bit measuring ¼ inch Spirit level Pencil Shutter kit for your windows measurements

Measurements Before you make your purchase, dont forget to check the measurements to find out what size you need. Dont try to guess it as this could prove an expensive mistake especially if you have odd size or shaped windows and need them specially made.

Filler strips Use your included filler strips to make any adjustments you need to the shutters width. Use the strip to help you to find out where you are going to drill. Use the spirit level to make sure it is in the correct place and mark the drill holes with your pencil. Pre-drill the holes before moving onto the next step.

Measuring the shutters

The next step is to put all of your shutters together to measure their width Installing the filler strips Once you have worked out how many filler strips you need screw them by inserting your screws through your frame and slide in the filler strips. Tighten the screws slowly so as not to cause damage and do this on both sides.

Installing the shutters

Hold your shutters in the place you wish them to be and fix them into place by putting in the screws and tightening slowly on both sides. The reason for tightening slowly is to ensure you can make adjustments if you need to.

Check everything is working

With all the hard work done, your next step is to make sure that the shutters are aligned properly. Ensure that they can close easily and once you know they do you can use the special plugs to cover up any screw holes.

Attach any fixtures you need

To enable your shutters to open and close properly you will more than likely have additional fixtures. At this point attach them following the included instructions without adding the latch just yet. You will already have the pre-drilled holes in place for them. Once you have checked everything is working as it should you can then attach the latch and make sure that it is aligned properly so that not only do you have shutters that look great, they will also be able to serve the purpose they were bought for.

Little Known Secrets Of Window Tinting, That Can Catch You Out

Are you considering getting some window tinting done? If so The first and undoubtedly the most important thing you need to understand about window film is the difference between quality window film and poor film. And this is why: Premium window film will last for the lifetime of your windows whereas bad window film will only last up to three years, depending on the rigours of your environment.

The only way for a novice to tell the difference between premium and poor quality film is price and guarantee. When inquiring with a supplier, ask how long the film is guaranteed for. If its not at least 12 years keep looking. And also look out for the shady operator who offers you a guarantee on cheap film and hikes the price, to make it look like its good film, but will either not be around, or simply do nothing if you get back to them because your tint has failed.

Heres the tip, (and by the way Ive found this to be true with most things), if your only goal in getting quotes is looking for the cheapest possible price, then you will naturally find yourself with the poor product and the real price you pay will be in 2-3 years when your windows start to blister, fade and/or peel and look horrible. Be warned, the cheapest price is usually just crap!

Every window film has different advantages, so the first thing you need to be sure of is the most important reason for installing window tint. Lets look at each advantage in a little more detail so you can better figure out the most appropriate solution for your application.

The core benefits of good quality tint are:

Heat Rejection: Premium window film rejects heat by blocking up to 73% of Total Solar Energy through windows. That really is cool!

UV Rejection: Good quality window film prevents up to 99% of infra red radiation from penetrating your windows. And as a bonus, it also eradicates 93% of glare, which massively improves for your view and makes things look really cool!

Privacy: The right film will also provide daytime privacy, allowing everyone inside to remain cool, enjoy the views, and at the same time have total privacy from prying eyes during the day. This is particularly important if you are looking for an office window tint.

Safety and Security: These specially designed films stop glass from shattering on impact. Safety films are designed to withstand the force of human impact, while security films can withstand an explosion without shattering. Since the collateral damage from accidents where windows are broken comes from shards of glass spraying like shrapnel, or large sections of glass dropping like a guillotine, the major issues associated with safety are avoided. It also stops your windows from becoming a soft and easy entry point for burglars, because both the impact and noise required to force entry is so noticeable burglars would rather simply move on in search of an easier, softer target.

Lastly of course theres the matter of style. Good quality window film also add style to windows; and for many people its the aesthetic charm that tinted windows add that is the driving force for their installation.

The next point I want to discuss is relevant to drivers and it concerns installing the darkest legal tint on your car.

Generally, the darkest legal tint legally allowed on a vehicle is one with a VLT (visible light transmission) level of 35%, on all vehicle windows (excluding the front windscreen, which cannot have any window film except for a visor strip across the top). The only exception to this are in the NT and WA. In the NT you are allowed a minimum VLT of 16% for windows behind the driver; and in WA you are allowed 20% VLT on windows behind the driver.

Now as most cars already have a slight tint in the glass in their front windows, this needs to be taken into consideration when adding tint to a vehicle. Heres how the maths looks. Most cars already have a slight tint in the glass in their front windows, so this should be considered when adding tint to a window. Heres why. If the factory glass on your car already block 30% of light, when a film with the darkest legal tint of 35% is added to this window, it will emit only 35% of light into a window that is already only emitting 70% of light, so the final VLT reading will be impacted by the combination of both VLT ratings.

This needs to be taken into consideration because if a driver inadvertently fails to comply with tinting regulations, the result can be a fine. But worse still, if a vehicle is involved in an accident and its illegally dark windows are considered by the court to be a contributing factor, this could result in the cancellation of your insurance policy, leaving you exposed to the full financial culpability of the accident. And if thats not bad enough criminal charge could apply if property is damaged or people are injured.

The final thing to consider is that by modifying a vehicle with darker than legal windows, the vehicle becomes unroadworthy, which means you cant drive the car again until it has been put through a roadworthy test, in which case the illegal tint will have to be stripped off the windows. Thats why the combined VLT of both the glass and film really should be considered when youre selecting the appropriate tint for your car.

So what do I really want you to get from this article? When it comes to window tinting, make sure you use a good quality product and that your installer has the expertise to be able to offer you the right solution for your circumstances. That way youll end up with a range of benefits, instead of a number of issues.

Noise Reduction With Double Glazing

Double Glazing kirkby in Ashfield

Unwanted sound or noise is everywhere. Whether it originates from road traffic, aircraft, factories, discos or merely from neighbours, noise is a nuisance which can, in the extreme, cause physical and psychological illness, a fact recognised and campaigned against by the World Health Organisation.

Typical 4mm toughened glass will provide a mean noise reduction of Rm = 27dBA while double glazing with a 12mm hermetically sealed air-filled cavity, again using 4mm toughened glass, gives Rm = 29dBA. This 2dBA difference in sound intensity between single and double glazing would barely noticeable for the average person, thus demonstrating that standard double-glazing is not always a suitable and cost effective solution for noise insulation.

In a carefully controlled test, Storm Windows, using only a 40mm air cap and 4mm toughened glass reduced noise to 40dBA (please ask for a copy of the independent record). Noise is measured on a logarithmic scale. In real terms the result is a noise reduction of more that twice that of double-glazing, (Fig 1). The larger air space decouples the acoustic vibration usually present with single or standard double-glazing. The additional mass of glass improves the sound absorption of the total assembly. Space allowing, increasing the air cap up to a maximum of 200mm can also provide enhanced sound insulation.

standard Windows Are Made From A Single Sheet Of 3mm Glass. This Isn't Enough To Provide Acoustic (noise) Insulation. Using Thicker Glass Can Provide Some Insulation. Double Glazing Offers The Best Shield Against External Noises, But Some Types Of Double Glazed Windows Work Better Than Others. Here's What You Need To Know About Noise Reduction With Double Glazing. Double glazing is two sheets of glass separated by an air or gas pocket. Standard double glazed windows have two panes of 3mm glass separated by a 6mm air or gas pocket. This provides thermal (heat and cold) insulation, but not enough acoustic insulation to make a difference if outside noises are a problem.

Researchers have carefully calculated the levels of noise reduction offered by different types of double glazed windows. Thicker glass, a greater gap between panes of glass and using laminated glass are the most effective ways to improve acoustic insulation. These are some of the numbers researchers have come up with. Percentages are improvements over a standard 3mm single glass window: 19%: 4mm/12mm gap/4mm (voice noise reduction) 34%: 10mm/12mm gap/6mm (voice noise reduction) 46%: 10mm/12mm gap/6.38mm laminated glass (traffic noise reduction) 57%: 6mm/100mm gap/4mm (traffic noise reduction) One of the cheapest ways to reduce noises is also the most effective. Rather than replacing your windows, you can retrofit them with windows installed on your existing windows. Usually, these are acrylic windows installed with magnets. The air gap between your existing windows and the new window is 100mm. If properly fitted with no air gaps, this type of double glazing system can reduce traffic noise by up to 75 percent.

 • Open Windows and Doors keep every door and window open to allow cool breeze to waft through your conservatory during summer. Oftentimes, conservatories become hot because heat goes in through the suns rays, but not enough heat gets out. Just remember to close them when you no longer plan on staying there, as robberies become increasingly common in places with open windows and doors.
 • More Plants in addition to producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, some plants can also remove harmful toxins in the air while cooling down the surrounding area. Some great plants to add include Aloe Vera, Boston Fern, and Snake Plant.
 • Powerful Fans Youll want to invest in a strong fan or exhaust to help bring cool air in and hot air out of your conservatory. You will have to consider, however, the size of your conservatory, as large exhausts and fans tend to be unbearably noisy, more so for a small conservatory.
 • Evaporative Cooling if you have good air circulation in your conservatory but still suffer from unbearable heat, youll want to put in vases, aquariums, and other items that can store water, and then let powerful fans blow on the surface. This can significantly cool down your conservatory by a few degrees if done correctly.
 • Blinds blinds are the easiest objects to install yet are also one of the most useful, as they block the glare of the suns rays from entering when they become unbearably hot and harmful in summer. Whats great about blinds is that they also help insulate the conservatory, therefore preventing heat from escaping during winter. Take note, however, that because blinds also act as insulators, youll have to have good air circulation in your conservatory during summer.
 • Cooling Film just like tinting your car windows, adding a cooling film for your conservatory can help you reduce heat by as much as 80%! Unlike blinds, cooling films dont act as insulators, therefore keeping your conservatory much cooler with the added bonus of preventing your furniture and other items from fading due to the suns UV rays.
 • Cooler Colors floors and walls that arent made of transparent glass will inevitably absorb some of the heat from the suns rays, with darker colors absorbing more heat than lighter colors. By opting for light, pastel colors, you help your conservatory reflect the suns heat instead of absorbing it.
 • Air Conditioning arguably one of the most effective ways to keep your conservatory cool from the scorching summer heat, air conditioning units are unfortunately expensive to purchase and install. Also, keep in mind that running air conditioning in a conservatory will cost you much more money than running air conditioning in a room with cement or wood walls simply because the air conditioner has to work harder to pull the heat out as the suns rays beam them back in. If youd like to go this route, prepare to see your conservatorys temperature sink and your electricity bill shoot up.
 • Conservatory Roof Replacement if your conservatory is more than a few decades old, you might want to look at getting new self-cleaning tinted glass roofs, as theyre much more efficient in keeping the conservatory cool in the summer. This, however, can cost much more than the initial cost of the purchase and installation of an air conditioning unit.
